With GlobalData currently forecasting that the data and analytics market in pharma will reach $2.1bn by 2028, real-world data is becoming essential to healthcare research. In particular, linking disparate datasets will be crucial to delivering new insights that can drive improvements to patient care.
Yet the process of linking can be fraught with challenges. As well as siloed data and 鈥楩rankenstein鈥 databases, researchers must take care to adhere to regulatory guidelines such as HIPAA if they are to link data successfully.
Drawing on the expertise of real-world data leaders MarketScan庐, a Truven company, a new podcast discusses how researchers can get the most from linking data. Guests Guenter Sauter PhD, Sr. Director, Technology Product Management at MarketScan, and Liisa Palmer PhD, Portfolio Leader, Real World Data Research & Analytics, also from MarketScan, highlight common pitfalls and proven solutions.
鈥淲hen we link data, a very important aspect to us is compliance,鈥 explains Sauter. 鈥淎t the same time, what’s also extremely important to us is to maintain the utility of the data so that we’re not just de-identifying the data almost arbitrarily to achieve compliance, but that we are looking at specific use cases that clients have in mind.鈥
The podcast also considers how linked data can be used effectively.
鈥淎t the end of the day, linked data by itself isn’t going to provide value,鈥 says Palmer. 鈥淥ne it’s linked, the job isn’t finished. The value comes from being able to link appropriately and robustly and in a compliant way, but also on the other side having a team of a multidisciplinary team of researchers who understand how to generate the research that provides the value.鈥
